The Vista Verde PTA Academic Enrichment For All will be offering AMC 8 this year on Tuesday November 12, 3:15-4:15PM.

The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving  skills. Possible topics include but are not limited to: counting and probability, estimation, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry including the Pythagorean Theorem, spatial visualization, everyday applications, and reading, interpreting graphs and tables, linear or quadratic functions and equations, coordinate geometry, and other topics traditionally covered in a beginning algebra course.

Calling All Mathletes- Sign up Deadline October 19 – Saturday

Math competitions will resume next Weds 10/23/2019 in Mrs. Jacobs’ classroom #18 7:45-8:20AM.

We will be offering AreteLabs Math Madness this year. It is an online math competition for 3-8th graders.

Participants will compete against other schools online. There will be a round every Wednesday morning school is in session between 10/23/19 and 12/11/19 for a total of 7 rounds. We will have Chromebooks for students to use for this. If you are interested, please sign up here before 10/19/2019.

Mathleague – October 26 – Saturday

The elementary competition is for any 3-6th grader and will take place 8:00AM- 12:00PM. If you are interested in the elementary competition, sign up here.

The middle school competition is for any 6-8th grader and will take place 1:00PM- 5:00PM. If you are interested in the middle school competition, sign up here.

We still need parents to help with grading and proctoring on the day of the Mathleague competition. If you are interested, please sign up here.

We will be offering MOEMS again later in the year, AMC8 in November and Mathcounts in January. More information and signup links will be posted in the VV PTA newsletter.

IPSF Summer Program Registration Opens March 18 – Monday

Students can choose their own adventure this summer at IPSF’s summer enrichment program. Become a
top chef, program the next epic video game, or create an original masterpiece. With over 400 classes to
choose from, the sky is the limit! Students can explore interests or discover a new passion. Classes for
grades K-8 will begin June 13 at locations throughout Irvine. High School session begins June 11.

Congratulations to the Vista Verde Mathletes who participated in the Mathleague competition this past weekend. Over 30 Vista Verde students came out to compete with 140 students from the area.

Special kudos to the students who placed and/or qualified to compete in the next Mathleague level.

Mathleague Competition Sunday – October 14th for 3-8th grades

Vista Verde will be hosting a Mathleague competition again this year on Sunday October 14, 2018. The elementary competition for 3-6th grade will be in the morning 8:00AM-12:00PM. The middle school competition for 6-8th grade will be in the afternoon 1:00PM-5:00PM. Anyone 3-8th grade welcome to participate. If you are interested, please signup on http://mathleague.org/esevents.php. More information can be found on this website. Entry fee is $15 if you pay online. Please pay Mathleague directly. PTA will not be collecting money separately this year. You may list Jennifer Wong as the chaperone when you sign up.
Math Club will hold a practice session Wednesday October 10, 2018 7:40-8:15AM in Mrs. Jacob’s classroom, room 18. All are welcome to attend but the practice session is not mandatory.
We need parent volunteers at the Mathleague competition to help with proctoring and grading. If you are interested, please email vvmathclub@vistaverdepta.org.

Math Club

Math Club is open to Grade 4-8 students who want to be challenged in solving more advanced math problems.  The club is parent volunteer –led, and offered by PTA’s Academic Enrichment for All (AEFA) committee.

Math Club will meet from 7:40 to 8:15AM in Room 18 (5th grade wing, Mrs. Jacobs’ classroom) on scheduled Wednesdays.

  • Five (5) Math Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools (MOEMS) contests for Gr 4-8 will be administered at club meetings on 11/14, 12/12, 1/16, 2/13 and 3/6.
  • Mathcounts contest for Gr 6-8 will be administered over two (2) club meetings on 11/28 and 12/5.
  • Practices sessions to help students to become familiar with the format and types of problems presented in MOEMS, Mathleague.org, and Mathcounts competitions are offered during club on dates shown below.
